Kajiado Rangelands Carbon Project Shares First Monitoring Report and Swahili-Language Summary

The Kajiado Rangelands Carbon Project (KRCP) in Kenya has reached an important milestone with the preparation of its first monitoring report, documenting progress in rangeland restoration, soil carbon storage, and community livelihoods during 2024–2025.

Developed in partnership with local Maasai pastoralist communities and Soils for the Future Africa, the project uses Rapid Rotational Grazing (RRG) to restore degraded rangelands, improve grazing conditions for livestock and wildlife, and increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil.

Key highlights from the first monitoring period include:

  • More than 1.25 million tonnes of greenhouse gases removed: Project monitoring estimates approximately 505,000 tonnes of CO₂e removed in 2024 and 763,000 tonnes in 2025 through improved grazing management and soil carbon storage.

  • Improved rangeland health: Rapid Rotational Grazing has been implemented across approximately 479,000 hectares, with forage biomass increasing by approximately 20% above levels expected based on rainfall alone.

  • Stronger community livelihoods: Participating communities reported improvements in household income, livestock herd sizes, and food security. The percentage of children drinking milk on a given day increased from 41% to 79%.

  • Expanded employment and educational opportunities: The project engaged approximately 410 individuals in paid roles, while participating communities allocated KSh 43 million toward educational bursaries benefiting at least 4,660 children.

These results demonstrate the potential of community-led grazing management to deliver meaningful benefits for the climate, rangeland ecosystems, and pastoralist livelihoods.

Making Project Information Accessible

Transparency and community participation are central to theKRCP. To help ensure that project information is accessible to participating communities and local stakeholders, a Swahili-language summary of the first monitoring report has been prepared.

The summary outlines project activities, monitoring results, and reported benefits for the climate, communities, and biodiversity. Read the Swahili-Language Monitoring Report Summary.

The first monitoring report is currently undergoing verification. Results presented here are based on project monitoring data and remain subject to independent review.
